A remanufactured engine lets you keep the car, truck or SUV you know, for far less than the cost of replacing the vehicle. [Link: /automotive-services/transmission]

Timing Belt vs. Timing Chain: What's the Difference?

Both keep your engine's valves and pistons moving in sync. A timing belt is made of reinforced rubber and needs replacing on a set schedule, usually every 60,000 to 100,000 miles depending on the vehicle. A timing chain is metal and built to last longer, but chains stretch and their guides and tensioners wear over time. Warning signs include rattling at startup, a check engine light or rough running. Either way, a failure can do serious damage to the engine, so it pays to get it checked early. Not sure which your vehicle has? Give us a call and we'll tell you.

Signs Your Engine Needs Attention

  • Check engine light is on or flashing
  • Knocking, ticking or rattling noises
  • Oil or coolant leaks under the vehicle
  • Blue, white or black smoke from the exhaust
  • Overheating or a rising temperature gauge
  • Loss of power, stalling or rough idle
  • Burning oil smell or low oil between changes

FAQs

Why does a car engine overheat more often during summer?

High outdoor temperatures reduce your cooling system's ability to shed heat, especially in stop-and-go driving. Regular inspections, fresh coolant, proper oil levels and preventive maintenance help reduce the risk and keep your [engine safe throughout the summer] months.

Should I repair or replace my engine?

It depends on the damage, the vehicle's value and how long you plan to keep it. Many problems, like leaks, timing components and sensors, are straightforward repairs. When the damage is major, a replacement engine can cost far less than a new vehicle. We'll give you an honest assessment of both options.

How do I know if my timing chain is going bad?

Common signs are a rattling noise at startup, a check engine light, rough running or misfires. If you hear rattling from the front of the engine, have it inspected soon, because a failed timing chain can cause major engine damage.

Jeff Patterson

Had brakes repaired on my 2012 Expedition. Completely satisfied. Owner is honest and makes a great effort to see that each repair is to done correctly and that the customer is satisfied. Brant Jones has been my mechanic for 18 years. An honest and helpful mechanic is a good find. Any one star reviews are most likely written by someone who cannot be pleased or by a competing auto repair shop.

Absolutely fantastic! I work for a roadside assistance company and I called then to help us with a tow the other night, Blue was amazing. He got there quickly and was super pleasant on the phone. If I can even get more business their way they will get it every time. #teamblue
